With the introduction of the first ECE-approved LED retrofit lamps, two terms are appearing more frequently in the market: ECE type approval and road approval. Although they are often used interchangeably, they actually refer to two different concepts.

Understanding the distinction is important for drivers, workshops, and distributors alike, as it helps ensure the correct interpretation of information regarding the legal use of modern LED light sources.

Road Approval – A National Regulatory Framework

Road approval refers to the legal authorization to use a product in accordance with the regulations applicable in a specific country. The scope of such approval is determined by national legislation and may include additional requirements, such as compatibility with a specific vehicle model, headlamp type, or other technical conditions.

As a result, a product approved for road use under the regulations of one country is not necessarily authorized for use under the same conditions in other countries.

ECE Type Approval – A Harmonized Standard Based on UNECE Regulations

ECE type approval is based on the regulations developed by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). It confirms that a product has successfully passed all required testing and complies with the technical requirements defined in the relevant UNECE Regulation, including safety and photometric performance.

In the case of LED retrofit lamps approved under UNECE Regulation No. 37 (R37), the approval applies to the light source itself. This approval is recognized in countries that have adopted UNECE regulations, representing a significant step forward compared to systems based solely on national road approvals.

What Does This Mean in Practice?

For end users, the greatest advantage is simplicity and clarity.

For many years, upgrading to LED lighting often required checking vehicle compatibility lists, headlamp approval numbers, or additional conditions specified by national regulations.

ECE type approval in accordance with UNECE R37 introduces a new approach. For an approved H11 LED retrofit light source, there is no need to verify vehicle compatibility lists or headlamp approval numbers, as the approval applies directly to the light source as a compliant replacement for a conventional H11 halogen bulb in accordance with the requirements of the Regulation.
