Wheel refurbishment is no longer just about restoring appearance. Modern coating systems must provide long-term durability, mechanical resistance and protection against harsh environmental conditions. In this video, Kamil Koj from FARCO explains the complete RIMCO refurbishment process step by step.

Companies specialising in aluminium wheel refurbishment are placing increasing demands on coating systems. Besides an excellent finish, refurbished wheels must withstand UV radiation, moisture, road salt and automotive chemicals while maintaining high mechanical resistance.

The RIMCO system has been developed to meet these requirements. It is a three-layer coating system applied to mechanically prepared or chemically stripped aluminium wheels and has already been proven in international OEM markets.

Preparing the Wheel for Coating

As Kamil Koj from FARCO explains, the refurbishment process begins with proper surface preparation. After chemical stripping, the wheel is shot-blasted to create a clean surface suitable for coating.

Once the wheel has been inspected and confirmed to be free from defects, it is placed in an oven for approximately 20 minutes. During this stage, the wheel reaches a temperature of around 180–200°C, allowing trapped gases to escape before the coating process begins.

RIMCO recommends a horizontal hot coating technique. The first layer is a powder primer applied to the heated wheel, ensuring excellent flow and uniform coverage. After application, the primer is cured in the oven for approximately 10 minutes.

Three-Layer System for a Durable Finish

Once the primer has cured, the wheel is cooled to approximately 60-80°C before the next stage begins.

A thermosetting liquid base coat is then spray-applied. After the base coat has flashed off, a high-gloss acrylic clear powder coat is applied as the final protective layer.

The wheel returns to the oven for a final curing cycle lasting approximately 20-25 minutes. The result is a durable multi-layer coating designed to provide long-lasting protection against mechanical damage, UV exposure, moisture, road salt and automotive chemicals while delivering a premium finish.

In the demonstration, the finished wheel features a BBS Brown colour coated with a high-gloss acrylic clear coat using the RIMCO system.
