Pirelli ceases trading in UK on temporary basis

Pirelli has announced a temporary halt in tyre production at its two UK manufacturing facilities in Burton-on-Trent and Carlisle in direct response to what the company describes as “market conditions.”
It is understood that a recent cyber attack that crippled Jaguar Land Rover’s (JLR) operations for some five weeks is the potential reason behind Pirelli’s short-term shut down.
JLR, a major client of Pirelli, shut down its factories globally following its cyber-attack which meant the vehicle brand failed to produce a single vehicle during September.
This action by Pirelli has affected up to 1,200 workers including some 900 at the Carlisle site and a Pirelli spokesperson states, “Pirelli UK can confirm that production at its Burton-on-Trent plant will be temporarily halted for six days from October 24 to October 29 and at its Carlisle plant from October 26 to October 31. However, Pirelli remains fully committed to its UK operations.
“Pirelli continues to invest in its local manufacturing and recognises the strategic value of the UK market within its global footprint.”
Pirelli sells around 74 million car tyres each year and are also the current tyre-provider for the Formula 1 World Championship along with other forms of circuit racing, rally and motocross.
